FixedWidth AI
Report-to-Excel for legacy systems

Convert legacy reports and fixed-width text to clean Excel

Drop in a report from IBM i (AS/400), a mainframe, COBOL, SAP or an older ERP or accounting system. Rules and AI find every column, strip out page headers and subtotals, and fix negatives and dates, so you get a spreadsheet you can sum, sort and pivot. No Text Import Wizard, no sign-up, and your file is converted right in your browser, never uploaded.

  • No column counting
  • Headers & subtotals removed
  • Every line accounted for
  • Private: no file upload

Why it's different

Stop cleaning up reports by hand

Hours of cleanup, done in seconds

Counting characters in the Text Import Wizard, deleting page headers row by row, retyping 1,440.00- as a negative: all of it happens the moment you drop the file. A 150,000-line report converts in seconds.

Numbers that tie back to the report

Nothing is dropped silently. Every line is in the table or in a review list you can restore from, rows that may be misaligned are flagged, and amounts become real numbers, so your totals reconcile.

Your file stays on your computer

Reading, cleanup and export all run in your browser, and the full file never leaves it. To help find the columns, our code picks up to 70 sample lines and masks long numbers in your browser before anything is sent to AI. We don't store your data or use it to train AI models.

Everything a legacy report needs to become a spreadsheet

Excel's Text Import Wizard and Power Query make you set every column yourself, then leave the page headers, subtotals and text-formatted numbers for you to clean up. Here, finding the columns, cleaning the report and fixing the values happen in one step.

Finds every column automatically

Built-in rules read the layout and AI handles the tricky spots, with every boundary checked against your actual rows. Fields that run together with no spaces, dashed column rulers and SAP-style tables drawn with | bars are all handled.

Cleans up the whole report

Page headers, repeated titles, divider lines, subtotals, job logs and “rows selected” messages are removed. Group headings like “DEPT 0410” and sign-off lines become columns, YTD lines join the record above, and several tables in one file go to separate sheets.

Fixes legacy numbers and dates

Trailing minus signs, CR/DB, (1,234.00) and COBOL signed numbers become real negatives. Dates like 10/18/26, 101826, 1261018 (IBM i) or 17-DEC-80 (Oracle) become real Excel dates, and leading zeros in IDs are kept.

Reads mainframe and COBOL files

EBCDIC encoding, ASA printer control characters and records with no line breaks are handled automatically. Add the COBOL copybook (.cpy) and every field is read to its exact layout, packed decimal (COMP-3) and binary fields included.

Never drops your data

Every line ends up in the spreadsheet or in a list you can review and restore, one line at a time. Rows that may be misaligned are flagged for you to check.

A spreadsheet ready for analysis

Numbers and dates are real Excel values you can sum, sort and pivot, and IDs stay as text. A Field Layout sheet records each field's position and length, a handy record layout for files that never had one. CSV is one click away.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fixed-width text file?

A plain-text file where each field sits at a fixed range of character positions instead of being separated by commas or tabs. Printed reports and data exports from IBM i (AS/400), mainframes, COBOL programs and older ERP, accounting and payroll systems usually come this way, as .txt, .prn, .rpt, .lis, .out or .dat files.

How do I convert a fixed-width text file to Excel?

Drop the file onto the converter above, or paste the text. The columns are found for you, page headers, dividers and subtotals are removed, and you download a clean .xlsx or .csv file. There are no formulas to write and no column widths to set.

How is this different from Excel's Text Import Wizard or Power Query?

Both make you set the column breaks yourself, and both treat a report as plain data: page headers, repeated column titles, subtotals and blank lines come in as rows, and amounts like 1,440.00- arrive as text. This converter finds the columns, removes the report clutter and fixes the values for you, the way report-mining software does, right in your browser.

How do I open a .prn or spool file in Excel?

.prn and spool files are reports printed to a file, laid out in fixed-width columns with page headers on every page. Excel opens them as one long column of text. Drop the file here instead: it's split into columns, the page headers and printer codes are removed, and you can download it as Excel.

Can it convert AS/400 (IBM i) and mainframe reports?

Yes. It reads spool files and data exports from IBM i (AS/400) and z/OS, including EBCDIC files, ASA carriage-control characters, records with no line breaks, JES job logs around the report and CYYMMDD dates. Signed amounts such as 1,250.00CR or COBOL zoned decimals become real negative numbers.

Can I use a COBOL copybook? Does it handle COMP-3 packed decimals?

Yes. Add the .cpy copybook along with the data file and each record is read to its exact layout: PIC X and 9 fields, implied decimals (V99), signed zoned decimals, OCCURS, REDEFINES, and packed decimal (COMP-3) and binary (COMP) fields decoded straight from the file's bytes. Header and trailer records are set aside, and the detail records become the table.

Does it work with SAP, Oracle, SQL Server and other database output?

Yes. SAP lists drawn with | bars, SQL Server “results to text”, Oracle SQL*Plus, DB2, MySQL and PostgreSQL output are all read column by column. Messages such as “4 rows selected.” are left out, NULL becomes a blank cell, and a file holding several result sets gives one table per result.

Will the numbers and totals still match the original report?

That's the point. Nothing is deleted silently: every line is either in the table or in a review list where you can restore it. Negative formats, dates and leading zeros are converted by fixed rules, not retyped by AI, and rows that may sit off their columns are flagged so you can check them against the source.

Why not just paste the report into an AI chatbot?

A chatbot can tidy up a short sample, but a full report is often more than it reads in one go, it may retype a number wrong, and the whole file goes to the provider. Here the conversion is done by code that slices every line the same way, so every value comes straight from your file, and AI only sees a short masked sample to help find the columns.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Your file is read, cleaned and converted entirely in your browser, and the full file never leaves it. To help find the columns, AI receives a sample of up to 70 lines. Long numbers in it are masked by our code in your browser before it is sent, not by the AI; other text in those lines is sent as-is. AI only suggests where the columns are and never changes your values. We don't store your file or the sample, and we don't use your data to train AI models. The AI provider handles the sample under its own terms, which our Privacy Policy explains.

How large a file can I convert?

Up to 50 MB. A 150,000-line report converts in a few seconds, and work runs in the background so the page stays responsive. If the result has more rows than one Excel sheet holds (1,048,576), it continues on further sheets.

What if a column is split in the wrong place?

Click “Columns look off? Adjust them manually” below the table to drag, add or remove column boundaries. The table and your download update instantly.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. There's no account to create and nothing to install. Open the page and convert.
